BRIEF HISTORY
Even before the Spanish arrived, Madre de Dios was seen as a land of legends and was thought to be either El Dorado or paititi. During Inca times, it was part of the antisuyo, the northeaster region of empire, but it represented a difficult territory to subject for the Inca monarchs. Yet extremely valuable due to its natural resources.
GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
The department of Madre de Dios is formed mainly by flood plains of three and even four terraced levels. The lowest are flooded every and generally swampy. The south is dominated by the secondary mountain range of the carabaya cordillera.

PROVINCE OF TAMBOPATA
Colpa de Guacamayos de Colorado
The “Colpa” (macaw clay lick) is a place where macaws congregate, formed along the shores of the river due to certain erosion processes thet allowed the formation of soil rich in mineral salts. Lt is approximately 50 meters / 164 feet high, 500 meters / 1640 feet long, and is considered the largest in the Peruvian amazon rainforest.
Sandoval Lake
Lt is approximately 3 km. / 2 miles long. 1 km. / 0,6 miles wide, and 0,5 centimetres / 0,1 inches to 3 meters / 10 feet deep. The water remains at an average temperature of 26ºC (79.8ºF), and a huge amount of fish live there. Lt is surrounded by aguajales, swampy areas where, among other exotic species, a native palm tree called aguaje grows.
Valencia Lake
The lake is 15 km. / 9 miles long, 800 meters / 2625 feet wide, and between 0, 5 and 15 meter / 1, 6 and 49 feet deep, and thanks to its trees and fish, it is considereda privileged sport.
Bahuaja-Sonenethis National Park
This national park was established in order to protect the only tropical humid savanna that exists in Peru. The park is located between the Madre de Dios and puno departments in the provinces of Tambopata, carabaya, and sandia.
Tambopata National Reserve
Locate between the basins of the Tambopata and heath rivers, the reserve covers an area of 274.690 hectares and found in both the Madre de Dios and puno departments. The wealth of its biodiversity is immeasurable, and scientist have already registered 632 bird species, 1200 butterfly species, 169 mammal species, 205 fish species, 103 amphibian species, and 67 reptile species. The vegetation is typical of tropical regions.
PROVINCE OF MANU
Manu National Park
Manu national park is spread out between two departments, Cusco and Madre de Dios, and covers an area of 1,692.137 hectares (or the entire Manu river basin). Since the Manu national park has formed the nucleus of the Manu biosphere reserve, which was declared a natural world heritage site by the UNESCO in 1987. Although no one is allowed to enter, visitors can stay in authorized lodges in the reserved area and in the cultural zone adjacent the park.

The road leading to this place is rich in natural landscapes. The design of the city’s main square is the main attraction since the principal economic activities of the department are represented there.
FOLKLORE
The traditional dances of this department represent scenes of animal life, myths, legends, and mysteries of the jungle. The most popular are the changanakuy, the otorongo, and the suri.
HANDICRAFTS
The artistry of the department is made with plants, fibers, seeds, and jungle roots. You can find works fashioned in the same way they have been for hundreds of years such as bows and arrows out of cashapona wood and decorated with feathers, typical dresses, adorned with seeds and feathers, made and animal teeth.

FESTIVITIES CALENDAR
There are parades that move along the main streets of the city, marching contests, a beauty queen contest, and the election of Miss Manguare and king momo.
The feast of john the Baptist takes on a symbolic character since water is a vital element throughout the entire amazon rainforest. You can listen to local bands and try food of the area.
The purpose of this festival to strengthen the Amazonian cultural identity through dance contests, traditional activities and food, mystic ceremonies (payments to the land and ayahuasca vision quest) as well as promote the research done on ayahuasca through a congress of investigators.
Competitions like regattas and motorcycle races, food testings and a beauty queen contest take place during the week.
The following events take place: the Picture presentation of “the Incas, corner stone”, cooking and cocktail contest, southern Marco-region hotel congress, Venice night at the port authority headquarters, and a gastronomic festival
The celebrations start at night with parties, serenades, and dances. There are parades, athletic tournaments, and Artisanal and Christmas fairs on the main day.
